Client : PSL Energy Services

Major Assignment Summary

PSL Energy Services engaged prosource.it to carry out technical project management of all server equipment in the main data centre. They sought assistance with a technical perspective covering areas such as the procurement, the installation and the migration to the new environment. The solution selected encompassed the migration of servers and services to an infrastructure based around the ESX product from VMware, backed by hardware from HP.

PSL Energy Services are a global company providing specialised solutions to the energy sector. They have about 1000 seats worldwide with their data centre based in Aberdeen. The brief was to provide a resilient and flexible solution; a solution which would be “right sized” and individually tailored to meet with the requirements of the business. PSL Energy Services had a particular desire to make a defined move away from the discrete one physical server to one function model. The virtual nature and hence portable aspect of services provided by VMware’s virtualised infrastructure ideally fitted these requirements. The existing core infrastructure consisted of 14 physical servers, it was migrated to 4x ESX hosts, configured as two clusters (one at either end of a 100M LES circuit), both clusters connected to HP SANS storage.

To that end, prosource.it became involved just after the issue of the tender document. After joining the project, the chronology of work and the project was:

Environment was delivered on time and in budget to customer's satisfaction.
