Major Assignment Summary

Prosource.it has been responsible for supporting Smith International’s IT infrastructure in the UK since 2000. This includes the support of 12 servers and 200 users located at five main locations in Aberdeen and a further four remote UK sites.


For the past four years prosource.it has fulfilled an interim IT manager role for the UK responsible for liaising with the customer’s central IT function based in Houston.


Key activities during the past few years include


• Ongoing daily IT Support of UK infrastructure
• Migration of all servers from Windows Server 2000 to Windows Server 2003
• Migration of the Exchange server from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003
• Hardware upgrade of 17 servers and migration of all data, applications and services.
• Migration of 1TB of data including financial data from external data storage to new internal data storage.
• Upgrade of backup facility at all sites to ensure full data backup is provided at all sites in an efficient timescale.
• Providing Cisco router, HP LAN switch, Snapgear and PIX firewall support
• Upgrading and maintenance of LAN and VPN connections between Aberdeen based sites and Smith international WAN, including migrating two sites to MPLS.
• Installation of new 4Mbit dedicated internet connection for Portlethen facility to supplement existing connection at Bridge of Don facility. Also installation of seven ADSL connections and VPN firewalls at UK sites to provide a VPN connection to remote sites or be utilised as a backup connection. This service is made available to visitors restricted from accessing the LAN directly.
• Creation of IT disaster recovery plan for all the sites located in Aberdeen.
• Dealing with annual SOX audits from Deloitte regarding financial data and systems
• Maintaining the Dillon financial system and user access while also ensuring that all access, permissions and backups complied with SOX. This system was eventually replaced by Houston based Oracle system.
• Implementation and maintenance of security entry systems. one of which is utilised for staff time keeping
• Implementing and maintaining Scanfile system to provide document scanning for all financial and invoicing documents.
• Implementing and maintaining PTC ProE Engineer application server and local client installations for engineering department.
• Rollout of webcam and Chat 50 systems to selected users as part of Smith International’s Worldwide rollout of Live Meeting conferencing system.
• Upgrade of meeting and training rooms located at Portlethen facility to allow multi user presentations with network connectivity supplied to all users. Also including new multimedia projection systems and video conferencing.
• Implementing daily and weekly server checks and backup tape rotation logs for each site.
